چکیده

Recently, heterogeneous networks with wired and wireless links are becoming common. However, the performance of TCP data transmission deteriorates significantly over such networks because of packet losses caused by the high bit error rate of wireless links. We had proposed receiver-based ACK splitting mechanism to solve that problem previously. Our mechanism does not need modifications to the sender TCP or the base station. It uses the ACK-splitting method for increasing the congestion window size quickly to restrain the throughput degradation caused by packet losses due to the high bit error rate of wireless links. In this paper, to evaluate the effectiveness of our mechanism, we develop a mathematical method to derive the throughput of a TCP connection over heterogeneous networks. In result, we find that the larger the bandwidth of the wireless link is, the more effective our mechanism becomes, therefore, the mechanism’s usability will increase in the future.

Receiver-Based ACK Splitting Mechanism for TCP over Wired/Wireless Heterogeneous Networks

With the rapid development of wireless network technologies, heterogeneous networks with wired and wireless links are becoming common. However, the performance of TCP data transmission deteriorates significantly when a TCP connection traverses such networks, mainly because of packet losses caused by the high bit error rate of wireless links. Many solutions for this problem have been proposed in...

M-TCP: Using Disconnection Feedback to Improve Performance of TCP in Wired/Wireless Networks

In this paper, we propose the M-TCP algorithm for heterogeneous wired/wireless networks. The algorithm is a modification of M-TCP that was proposed for deployment in mobile cellular networks. It is recommended that Internet hosts enable the delayed acknowledgement (delayed ACK) option to maximize network bandwidth by reducing the number of ACKs sent to a TCP sender by a TCP receiver. The M-TCP ...

Rate Control over Wired/Wireless Networks

TFRC is a TCP-Friendly Rate Control protocol based on TCP Reno's throughput equation. It is designed to provide optimal service for unicast multimedia flow operating in the wired Internet environment. However, in wireless networks, TFRC, same as TCP Reno, suffers significant performance degradation. In this paper, we propose to make use of a more advanced equation to enhance TFRC over wireless ...

Performance of TCP over lossy upstream and downstream links with link-level retransmissions

We study the efficacy of using link-layer retransmissions to improve TCP performance over lossy wireless links. The scenario we consider is where TCP packets traverse a wired network to a base station, and thence over a single wireless hop to a stationary receiver. Unlike many previous studies, which rely on simulation, we develop an analytical model for calculating TCP throughput; unlike all p...

TCP Congestion Control Scheme for Wireless Networks based on TCP Reserved Field and SNR Ratio

Currently, TCP is the most popular and widely used network transmission protocol. In actual fact, about 90% of connections on the internet use TCP to communicate. Through several upgrades and improvements, TCP became well optimized for the very reliable wired networks. As a result, TCP considers all packet timeouts in wired networks as due to network congestion and not to bit errors. However, w...
